You are standing at the ATM in the arrivals hall at Salvador airport with the card already in the slot, and the screen is asking how much you want. Somewhere behind you a suitcase wheel is squealing. You have no idea whether the answer is R$ 400 or R$ 2,000, because nobody told you what an island with no bank actually costs.
This page is the answer we give our own guests. Every number below is what things cost in Boipeba in 2026, collected in the village where we run our flats, with the caveat that a beach barraca in January charges more than the same kitchen in May. For orientation, the real traded at roughly R$ 5.50 to the US dollar in September 2026, so R$ 100 is about US$ 20. We put both currencies on the numbers that matter.
The rule that changes every other number
There is no ATM on Boipeba. Not a broken one, not one in the pharmacy: none. Card machines exist in most restaurants and shops and they work until the mobile signal drops, which it does. Pix works for Brazilians and for anyone with a Brazilian account.
So the budget question is not only how much your trip costs, it is how much of it you must carry in notes. Our rule for a couple: bring the whole island portion in cash plus twenty per cent, and treat cards as the backup rather than the plan. The full mechanics are in money, cash and Pix in Boipeba.
Getting here: what each route costs per person
| Route from Salvador |
Time |
Cost per person (2026) |
| Ferry to Bom Despacho, bus to Valença, fast boat |
7 to 8 h |
R$ 100 to R$ 122 (US$ 18 to 22) |
| Catamaran to Morro de São Paulo, 4x4, boat |
about 5 h |
R$ 300 to R$ 400 (US$ 55 to 73) |
| Semi-terrestrial transfer via Graciosa |
about 5.5 h |
from R$ 250 (US$ 46) |
| Charter flight (no scheduled flights since June 2026) |
30 min flight |
around R$ 14,000 per leg for the aircraft |
Inside those totals, the fixed pieces are the ferry crossing for foot passengers at roughly R$ 7 on weekdays and R$ 9.20 at weekends, the fast boat from Valença at R$ 63 per person, and the slightly shorter crossing from Graciosa at R$ 58. The catamaran from Salvador to Morro ran R$ 152 to R$ 172 per person this year. Full route detail sits in how to get to Boipeba from Salvador.
Two costs travellers forget. A wheelbarrow carrier at the pier charges from about R$ 20 per bag, depending on size and distance, and it is money well spent if you brought a hard-shell suitcase. And a private speedboat from Valença, if you land late and refuse to sleep on the mainland, runs around R$ 700 for two.
Moving around the island
No cars. Your options are your feet, a tractor towing a trailer, a quadricycle or a boat.
| Trip |
Price 2026 |
| Tractor, Velha Boipeba to Moreré |
R$ 13 to R$ 15 per person, leaves with about 6 passengers |
| Quadricycle to Moreré |
R$ 30 to R$ 40 per person, R$ 50 to R$ 60 for two |
| Quadricycle to Cueira |
R$ 15 to R$ 25 per person |
| Private speedboat, village to Moreré |
from about R$ 800 for up to 4 people |
| Walking to Tassimirim or Cueira |
free, 30 to 60 minutes on sand |
The tractor is the cheapest ride and the one people photograph. It also leaves when it fills, so build in a wait.
Eating and drinking
Restaurants in Velha Boipeba are small kitchens with sand floors, not a resort strip. The prices we see in the village in 2026:
- Prato feito, the plate of the day with fish, rice, beans and salad: from R$ 35 (US$ 6.5). It is the single best value on the island and often feeds two light eaters.
- A main course at a proper restaurant: from about R$ 35.
- Moqueca for two, the dish you came for: R$ 90 to R$ 150 depending on whether it is fish, prawn or octopus. Fish moqueca at R$ 90 to R$ 150 is common; octopus climbs to about R$ 90.
- Beer: roughly R$ 12 to R$ 15 for a large bottle in the village, more on the beach.
- Coconut water at a barraca: around R$ 8 to R$ 12.
- Bottled water, 500 ml: about R$ 4 to R$ 6. Refill from the filtered water in your flat instead.
Beach barracas at Moreré and Cueira charge more than the village for the same fish, and they are worth it once or twice for the table in the sand. High season, roughly late December through Carnival, pushes everything up. If a number here matters to your budget, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you what that kitchen is charging this month.
Sleeping: the honest price bands
| Band |
Price per night |
What you get |
| Hostel dorm bed |
from R$ 76 to R$ 90 per person |
Bunk, shared bathroom, fan |
| Simple private room |
from R$ 110 to R$ 150 for two |
Fan or basic air conditioning, breakfast sometimes |
| Mid-range pousada or flat |
from R$ 250 for two |
Air conditioning, hot water, breakfast, Wi-Fi |
| Upper end, beachfront |
R$ 600 and up |
Pool, sea view, service |
Low season, roughly April to July, discounts most of these by twenty to forty per cent, and the island is at its greenest and emptiest. That trade-off gets its own article in low season in Boipeba.
Tours
The one everybody does is the Volta à Ilha, the full day around the island: departure from Boca da Barra at about 9:30 am, natural pools at Moreré, Ponta dos Castelhanos, lunch stop at Cova da Onça, the mangrove of Rio do Inferno and oysters on the way back, returning between 5 and 6 pm. From R$ 250 per person, lunch usually not included.
Shorter options exist: a boat to the Moreré natural pools on the right tide, a canoe up the mangrove, a walk to Castelhanos that costs nothing but a day and a pair of shoes.
The new tourism fee
Cairu, the municipality that includes Boipeba, has announced a TUPA heritage fee of R$ 50 per visitor for Boipeba, later postponed with no start date in force. The equivalent fee at Morro de São Paulo is R$ 70. Start dates for these fees have already been postponed once, so treat R$ 50 per person as a line item to confirm rather than a certainty. Ask us before you travel and we will tell you what is actually being charged that week.

Where the money actually leaks
Three things blow budgets here, and none of them is the hotel.
The first is arriving late and buying a private boat. That is R$ 700 that a morning flight would have saved. The second is high season pricing on everything at once: the same room, the same fish and the same quadricycle all cost more between 20 December and Carnival, which is why New Year and Carnival in Boipeba is a separate conversation. The third is running out of cash on day two and paying tourist rates to solve it.
Boipeba is not an expensive island by Brazilian standards. It is an inconvenient one to top up in.
Perguntas frequentes
How much cash should a couple bring for three days?
Around R$ 1,700 for the economical version and R$ 3,000 for the comfortable one, if you have already paid your accommodation by card or transfer. Bring small notes; nobody at the tractor or the barraca wants to break a R$ 200 bill.
Is there an ATM in Boipeba?
No. Withdraw in Salvador or Valença. Card machines work in most restaurants and shops but depend on a mobile signal that drops without warning.
How much is the boat trip around the island?
From R$ 250 per person for the full day, roughly 9:30 am to 5 or 6 pm, with lunch usually paid separately at Cova da Onça.
Is Boipeba more expensive than Morro de São Paulo?
Accommodation and food are broadly similar, with fewer cheap options in Boipeba and far fewer expensive ones. What differs is the tourism fee and the crowd. We compare the two in Boipeba vs Morro de São Paulo.
Do prices change between seasons?
Yes, sharply. Late December to Carnival is the peak. April to July is the quietest and cheapest, with more rain and greener light.
When you have your number, check the dates and the real nightly price on our flats page, or ask us anything on the FAQ page before you book the boat.
