April 2028 in Boipeba: rain, silence, lower rates and two long weekends

Last Thursday of March, a white curtain of rain crossing the channel, and nobody in the village running. April 2028 is not one month: it is two empty weeks with two holidays wedged between them.

Five in the afternoon on the last Thursday of March, and the sky over Tinharé across the channel has gone the colour of wet slate. You are on the veranda with a beer and you can see the rain coming: a white curtain moving across the water, maybe fifteen minutes out. Below you, in the lane, nobody is running. A woman carries on hanging washing. Two men keep talking outside the shop. Somebody takes a chair in off a step, which is the only concession anyone makes.

Forty minutes later it has gone through, the sand is steaming, and the light afterwards is the best of the day.

That afternoon is April arriving. We run ten flats in Velha Boipeba, we live here through every April, and this is the honest version of the month: the rainfall number behind the reputation, what the rain actually does to a day, what April 2028 does differently because of where the holidays fall, and what is worth booking now.

The number behind the reputation

April is the wettest month of the year on this stretch of the Bahia coast. We are not going to soften that.

The nearest long climate series to Boipeba is at Valença, the mainland town your boat leaves from. There, April averages around 109 mm of rain across about 14.6 wet days. For contrast, September, the driest month of our year, averages around 51 mm. July, at the tail of the wet stretch, sits near 76 mm.

So April is roughly double September. It is also, and this is the part the number hides, about fifteen days with rain in them and fifteen days without.

We do not have a long rainfall record measured inside Velha Boipeba itself and we are not going to invent one. Valença is an hour and a half away by boat, on the mainland, and it is the closest honest proxy we have.

What the rain actually does

A wet month in a temperate country means grey. A wet month here does not.

Rain on this coast is convective. A cell builds through the afternoon, darkens the sky over the channel, dumps for twenty to forty minutes with wind behind it, and moves on. The sand steams. The sky reopens. Frogs start. In a seven-day April week you will typically get beach on most days, one day when it simply does not stop, and several afternoons that cost you forty minutes under a roof.

What ruins an April day is not rain. It is wind, because wind is what cancels the boats. A strong south-easterly makes the open-water leg on the ocean side unpleasant and turns the snorkelling water cloudy, and between April and July that is the real reason a trip does not run. The boatmen know by seven in the morning and they say so plainly.

If your weather app is showing seven raindrops in a row, read the rain section of the best time to visit Boipeba, month by month before you cancel anything. A global model cannot know whether the cell lands on Boca da Barra or three kilometres out to sea, so it marks a chance of rain on every day, which is the only honest thing it can do.

April 2028 is not one month, it is four different weeks

This is the planning fact for this particular year, and it is worth more than any forecast.

Easter 2028 falls late. Easter Sunday is 16 April, which drops Holy Week into the second week of the month: Maundy Thursday on 13 April, Good Friday on 14 April, Holy Saturday on the 15th. That is a four-day domestic travel wave in Brazil, and everything that can be booked gets booked.

Then Tiradentes, 21 April, falls on a Friday in 2028, which makes a second long weekend one week after the first.

Week of April 2028 What it is
1 to 7 April Genuinely quiet. Low rates, low pressure, some kitchens on reduced days
8 to 16 April Holy Week. Busy, booked, minimum stays, boats full
17 to 20 April The gap. Quiet again, and underrated
21 to 23 April Tiradentes long weekend. Busy, Brazilian, three days
24 to 30 April Quiet, and the cheapest week of the month

So if what you want is the empty April people talk about, you want the first week or the last week. If what you want is the island fully open and sociable, you want one of the two long weekends and you should already be booking.

What does not change in April

The variable is rain. Everything else stays where it was in February.

  • Sea temperature: about 28 C, 83 F. Exactly what it is in January. Nobody here owns a wetsuit in any month.
  • Daytime highs near 31 C, 88 F. Nights near 23 C, 74 F.
  • Sunrise around 5:42, sunset between 5:22 and 5:38 in the afternoon. The day is still close to twelve hours long, and tropical twilight is about twenty minutes. Dinner happens after dark in every month here.
  • The tide table, which decides the natural pools at Moreré and the beach walk south, is indifferent to weather.

You will not be cold and the water will not be chilly. That is the part visitors from the northern hemisphere consistently get wrong about a tropical wet season.

What reduces, and what stays open

Between April and June a number of village kitchens run Thursday to Sunday rather than every day, and some beach shacks skip weekdays entirely. Six or seven restaurants in the village are usually going; in April not all of them are going on a Tuesday.

What stays: the mercadinhos, the health post, the boats to the mainland, the tractor and quad drivers, the pier. The two long weekends pull everything open again for a few days and then it settles back.

The practical consequence is a habit rather than a problem. Ask on the day, not from a list you saved three months ago, and keep something in the flat's kitchen so that "nothing is open tonight" is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

The mosquito paragraph

We would rather say this than have you discover it. After rain, mosquitoes wake up. Late afternoon near gardens and on the mangrove side is the worst of it, and April gives them the conditions they like.

Repellent with icaridin, applied before dinner rather than during it. Long sleeves at sunset. A plug-in if you are sensitive. It is manageable and it is real, and it is one of the two or three honest reasons April is cheaper.

What to book now, and in what order

If your April is one of the two long weekends: the nights, this week. Then the arrival day, avoiding the Thursday of Holy Week, which is when the whole country moves. Then nothing else, because everything else can be arranged here.

If your April is one of the quiet weeks: almost nothing needs booking in advance, which is the point of those weeks. Fix the nights and come. Rates in the April-to-July stretch typically run twenty to forty per cent below the year's high, and the current figures for your dates are on each flat's page rather than estimated in an article. See the flats and stay.

Either way: bring cash. There is no cash machine on Boipeba, card terminals depend on a mobile signal that heavy rain knocks over, and the nearest reliable machines are in Valença, an hour and a half each way.

Who should not come in April

We would rather lose the booking than have you write a disappointed review.

Skip April if your trip is short and built around one specific thing: a single boat day to Castelhanos, a proposal on a particular beach at a particular hour, a photograph you have already planned. The odds are fine over seven days and poor over three.

Skip it if grey weather genuinely affects you, because the day it does not stop is coming and one of your days will be it.

Come in April if you want the island cheap, quiet and green, if you can move your plans around by a day, and if the idea of a long lunch while it hammers on a tin roof sounds like a holiday rather than a loss.

Send us your April dates and we will tell you which of the four weeks you have landed in, and whether the tide gives you a Moreré morning inside it.
