Last Monday of January, coffee going cold, phone calendar open because somebody at work asked whether you were taking Carnival off. You scroll into February expecting the block of holiday to be sitting in the middle of the month, the way it usually is. It is not there. You keep scrolling. It is at the very bottom of the grid: Saturday the 26th, and Tuesday the 29th.
Twenty-six days. That is the distance between today and Carnival Saturday 2028, and it is the reason this page exists.
We run ten flats in Velha Boipeba and we have spent every January of the last few years answering the same message in the last week of the month: is it too late? The honest answer this year is no, not yet, but the list of things you can still fix is shrinking by about one item a week. Here is what to lock now, in order.
Where the calendar actually puts you
| Day |
Date in 2028 |
| Carnival Saturday |
26 February |
| Carnival Sunday |
27 February |
| Carnival Monday |
28 February |
| Carnival Tuesday |
29 February |
| Ash Wednesday |
1 March |
A Carnival Tuesday on 29 February is close to a one-off. The holiday follows Easter, Easter follows the moon, and the combination that drops Carnival Tuesday onto a leap day is rare enough that most people reading this will not see another one.
The practical part is duller and more useful: twenty-four days of February 2028 sit entirely outside Carnival, and the crush is compressed into four days at the very end of the month, spilling into the first week of March.
What a late Carnival already did while you were not looking
Brazilian school holidays run from around mid-December to the first days of February. In a normal year, the families go home and Carnival arrives a fortnight later, so the island never really empties.
In 2028 it does. The first three weeks of February are the quiet half of summer with none of the summer taken away: air around 32 C, sea around 28 C, and the beach in front of the village handed back to you.
Then the last four days arrive all at once. That compression is what you are booking into, and it is why a booking made in late January behaves differently from one made in late January of an ordinary year. What Carnival on the island actually looks like is in New Year and Carnival in Boipeba.
The three things to lock this week
One: your nights. Not the flights, not the transfer. The bed. On an island with a few hundred beds in total, accommodation is the constraint and everything else is arrangeable. Our minimum stay and deposit terms for the Carnival week are set per flat and published on each flat's page rather than quoted in an article, because they change and we are not going to publish a number here that turns out to be wrong for your unit. Send us your dates and we will give you the exact terms in writing.
Two: your arrival day. The single worst arrival day for Carnival week is Carnival Saturday itself, which is also the day everybody chooses. The boats are full, the pier at Valença is full, and the whole island is turning over at the same hour. Arrive on the Thursday or the Friday. You lose nothing and you gain a quiet first evening.
Three: the boat trip, if you want one. Collective boat trips fill in the morning during Carnival week, and the natural pools at Moreré only exist for about two hours around low water, so the tide picks the day, not you. Book it on the day you arrive, not the night before you want it.
Boats in Carnival week
The route does not change. The fast boats from Valença leave at 10:00 (not on Sundays), 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00, at R$ 63 per person, plus the R$ 10 TAPUIA embarkation fee in force at the Valença terminals since 31 January 2026. From Graciosa the crossing is R$ 58, running roughly 8:30 to 16:30, and there is no equivalent fee there. The São Joaquim ferry for a foot passenger is R$ 7.20 on a weekday and R$ 9.50 at weekends and on public holidays, under the AGERBA resolution of March 2026.
Extra sailings sometimes appear in a week like this. They are not a timetable and we will not tell you to plan around one. The two rules that survive every Carnival: get to the pier forty minutes before the boat you want, and never plan to land in Salvador after about half past eleven in the morning on the day you need to reach the island, because the last boat from Valença leaves at 16:00. How to pick a flight that makes that boat is in the last boat leaves at 4pm.
The numbers that do not move with the holiday
Lodging responds to demand. Almost nothing else here does, because the rest is priced by local associations.

At roughly R$ 5.50 to the US dollar, which is approximate and moves, the boat from the mainland is about eleven dollars and a full day on the water starts around forty-five.
One line to check rather than assume: Cairu, the municipality Boipeba belongs to, announced a visitor levy called TUPA of R$ 50 per person, later postponed with no start date in force. Ask us what is actually being charged the week you travel.
And the flat fact behind all of it: there is no cash machine on Boipeba. Not a broken one, not one in the pharmacy. Whatever you plan to spend in those four days comes across the water in your bag.
What Carnival is actually like here
Set the expectation correctly, because the word does a lot of work. There is no trio elétrico on this island, no blocos, no rope, no abadá. What there is: the village full, every kitchen open, music in the square, drumming that starts without anybody scheduling it, and a lot of Brazilian families who chose exactly this instead of Salvador.
It is sociable rather than loud, and it is over by a reasonable hour most nights. People who want the other thing go to Salvador for two days and come back here to recover, which is a genuinely good plan if you have the days.
If you actually want the opposite
Read the calendar again. If what you want is summer without the holiday, the first three weeks of February 2028 are the best-value window the Brazilian summer has, and they are still open at the end of January. Same sea, same heat, a fraction of the pressure, and no minimum-stay rules to work around.
We will tell you honestly which of the two your dates suit. Rates and availability across both halves of the month are on stay, and the flats themselves, two minutes from the pier, are on the flats.
If you have still not booked by mid-February
Then change the question. Stop asking for the four days and start asking what is left, because at that point you are choosing between a longer stay that includes the holiday and a shorter one after it.
The week after Ash Wednesday is the sleeper. The island empties on the Wednesday, rates come off the holiday level, the weather in early March is still full summer, and the boats have seats again. Every year a few guests land in that week by accident and write to us afterwards saying it was the best part of the trip.
Message us with your dates and how many of you there are, and we will tell you what is genuinely available rather than what we would like to sell you.
Frequently asked questions
When is Carnival 2028 in Brazil?
Carnival Saturday is 26 February 2028, Carnival Tuesday is 29 February, and Ash Wednesday is 1 March. The holiday falls about as late in February as it can, which leaves the first twenty-four days of the month outside it.
Is it too late to book Boipeba for Carnival 2028 at the end of January?
Not yet, but accommodation is the constraint on an island with a few hundred beds. Lock the nights first, then the arrival day, then the boat trip. Send us your dates and we will tell you what is actually free.
What are the boat times to Boipeba during Carnival week?
The fast boats from Valença run at 10:00 (not on Sundays), 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00 at R$ 63 per person plus the R$ 10 embarkation fee, and from Graciosa at R$ 58 roughly between 8:30 and 16:30. Extra sailings sometimes appear in holiday weeks but are not a timetable you can plan around.
Is there a street carnival in Boipeba?
No trio elétrico, no blocos and no abadá. The village version is music in the square, drumming, every kitchen open and a lot of Brazilian families. People who want the big event do two days in Salvador and come back here.
What is the minimum stay over Carnival?
It is set per flat and published on each flat's page, and we will confirm it in writing with your dates rather than quote a number in an article that may not apply to your unit.
